Hemp Oil is a cold-pressed process that pulls the oils from hemp seeds, specifically. Hemp seeds do not contain CBD. Hemp flower, leaves and stalks will contain the CBD compound in varying amounts, with flower being the most concentrated.

Is Hemp another name for Marijuana?

No. Hemp is a very specific plant that is from the same family as marijuana, but it is not the same. The 2018 Farm Bill allowed for Industrial Hemp to be cultivated for legal consumption as long as it does not contain more than 0.3% THC. The reason for this number is that this the threshold of where the feelings of being “high” might be felt by a consumer, thus lowering the danger of the product to nearly completely safe. This allowed for growers to genetically select for hemp plants that had high CBD and very low THC content. On the other hand, marijuana contains mostly THC (upwards of 30%) and hardly any CBD. When growers look for genetics, they are selecting to grow strains that are higher in THC content. THC is known to be psychoactive and is thus a federally regulated product. Regulations are currently vastly changing as we enter into the 2021 year.

Is CBD Oil just hemp oil?

No. They are very different. Hemp oil is a cold-pressed process that pulls the oils from hemp seeds, specifically. Hemp seeds do not contain CBD. CBD Oil contains high amounts CBD. CBD Oil is made from extracting the compound CBD from the flowers, leaves and stalks of the hemp plant.

Does CBD come from marijuana or hemp or cannabis?

Almost all CBD comes from hemp plants (flowers, leaves, stalks). Some marijuana will have a high-CBD strain, but this is not a common plant used for extraction of CBD. Cannabis is the family that both hemp and marijuana belong to, just like animals have different kingdoms and classes, so do plants.

Be Aware of Hemp Oil Ingredients

We would like to make a note here about some of the consumer misinformation that is being used during the “green rush” as products are being incorrectly labeled and sold so as to take advantage of consumers. Please note that hemp oil or hemp seed oil has many benefits, but they are not the same benefits found with CBD oil. Products that contain only hempseed oil, or hemp oil, will not provide the benefits found with CBD oil. On the other side of the coin, some products that are above the FDA's legal allowance of 0.3% THC might land you with a product you could feel some adverse effects. It is a wild west of products out there and being informed is the best way to move forward. Be sure to know what the ingredients are in the products you are purchasing. A product label that only has hemp oil or hempseed oil listed as an ingredient will only provide the benefits found in the oils vitamins, such as its Omega's. Again, the other side of the coin, you could end up with a product that is not following the regulations of less than 0.3% THC. The product label should have information in the ingredient list that identifies what the source of the CBD and the company that created the product. Product transparency is very important as regulations are put into place. Many manufacturers and retailers are taking lead and are providing lab analysis results for all their products to ensure consumer awareness and safety. Botanix Ltd has full transparency with their products. Check out their Certificate of Analysis page to see how it looks.

Let's break this down a little more simply if that was a lot of information to process.

Firstly, cannabis has the highest THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) content, averaging at 17% or more for prize winning strains. The hemp plant must contain less than 0.3% THC by law (Farm Bill 2018). Hemp seeds have zero THC. THC is what causes the mind altering effects or the “high” feeling. As for CBD (cannabidiol) content, hemp plants will have the highest amount of CBD content within their flowers, leaves and stalks, averaging 12-18%. Cannabis strains generally will have less than 0.15% CBD content, unless a high-CBD strain, such as Charlotte's Web. Hemp seeds will have the lowest amount of CBD, with trace amounts being available.
